Senior dog adoption

Why adopt a senior dog?

They sleep more. They know more. They ask for less and give more back. Senior dogs are the most overlooked dogs in rescue — and the most rewarding to adopt.

The case for seniors

What you get with a senior dog

What you see is what you get

A senior dog's personality is established. You will know within the first week whether they love cats, prefer mornings, or have opinions about the postman. No guessing. No surprises.

Calm from day one

Senior dogs have typically lived in homes. They know how houses work. They do not chew through three pairs of shoes or bounce off the walls at 6am. They sleep, mostly, and they do it elegantly.

Easier to manage

Less exercise, shorter walks, no puppy training. Our average adoptable senior needs two 20-minute walks a day. For people who love dogs but find the puppy energy stage exhausting, a senior fits differently.

The process

How adoption works

We do not work on a first-come-first-served basis. We match dogs to homes. The right home for a dog is more important than a fast placement.

1

Browse our dogs

Visit our Meet our Dogs page, filter by status, age, or breed type. Read each dog's full profile — story, medical history, foster report. Only "Adoptable" dogs are available; hospice and sanctuary dogs are not for adoption.

No timeline — take your time
2

Submit an application

Complete the adoption application form below. Tell us about your household, your experience, and the kind of dog you are looking for. We review all applications weekly — you do not need to apply for a specific dog.

Reviewed within 5 business days
3

Coordinator call

Our adoption coordinator calls to discuss your application and suggest dogs who might be a good match. This is a two-way conversation — you can ask questions, rule dogs out, and tell us what we have not thought to ask.

Within 48 hours of application review
4

Meet and greet

We arrange a meeting with the dog at a neutral location or at the foster home (with the foster's agreement). Take your time. Bring anyone who will live with the dog. There is no pressure to decide on the day.

Arranged within 2 weeks of coordinator call
5

Home check & adoption

A coordinator visits your home — 30 minutes, no surprises. If everyone is happy, we arrange the adoption. You receive a full care file, all medical records, the foster's handover notes, and a two-week check-in call.

Completion typically within a week of meet and greet
Adoption fees

What the fee covers

Adoption fees contribute to the cost of the dog's care during their time with us. They are not profit — they go directly back into the programme.

Questions

Adoption questions

Do I have to apply for a specific dog? +
No — and we actually prefer it if you don't. Apply with an open mind about the dog. Tell us what you are looking for and we will match you. Our process is built to find the right dog for your home, not the first available dog you spotted on the website.
What ongoing support do I get after adoption? +
You receive a two-week check-in call and are welcome to reach out to your adoption coordinator any time. We also connect you with our vet helpline for the first three months. You are not on your own — that is the whole point of having a coordinator, not just a transaction.
What if the adoption doesn't work out? +
The dog comes back to us. No questions, no judgment. We would rather have the dog returned than have an unsuitable placement continue. Failing early is better for the dog than failing slowly. We will support you through the return process and help you understand what to look for in your next adoption.
Can I adopt if I rent? +
Yes, but you must have written permission from your landlord before we can approve an adoption. We will ask to see it during the home visit. Some of our older, smaller senior dogs are a much easier landlord conversation than a puppy would be.
